A Day in My Quarantine Life

The year 2020 brings an unexpected turning point for all of us: COVID-19 pandemic. As a primary school student, I found myself faced with a new and challenging reality: Isolation. My normal school days have turned into virtual classrooms and my playground adventures have been put on hold. However, I soon discovered that quarantine also has its benefits. I will share how I  spent my quarantine days creatively and effectively.

Every morning I wake up excited and ready for the lesson of the day. My bedroom became the new classroom, complete with a desk, colorful stationery, and a computer for video calling with teachers and classmates. It was a different experience but I adapted quickly and virtual school became a daily routine.

Having more free time, I decided to explore new hobbies. One of my favorite activities is painting. I turned my bedroom wall into a canvas, creating a beautiful mural that brightens up the space. Painting has allowed me to express my creativity and emotions in these uncertain times.

I also discovered my love of gardening with my sister. We started with a few small pots on the balcony, growing flowers and herbs. Watching them grow from tiny seeds into brilliant trees gives me  a sense of accomplishment and connection to nature.

Cooking became a family affair. I help my mother in the kitchen, learning new recipes and techniques. Baking cookies is my forte and their delicious aroma fills our home with warmth and comfort. Every time my mother bakes a cake, I will be the first to taste her delicious carrot cake and eat it all without leaving some for my sister.

On weekends, we turn our living room into a covered campsite. We set up a makeshift tent, prepare with sleeping bags and pillows. We told ghost stories using flashlights and toasting marshmallows over makeshift “campfires” in the fireplace. It was a fun way to bring the family together, but Dad was the only one missing while he was in Singapore. We miss him during the pandemic.

I don't stop studying at the end of class. I explore educational websites and learn new skills like coding and solving puzzles. Online resources have broadened my horizons and kept my mind busy. I also participated in the Iskandar Malaysia Ecolife Challenge. I learned a lot about Save the Earth and do a lot of activities and forum uploads every day.

While quarantine brought unexpected changes to my life as a primary student in 2020, it also provided opportunities for creativity and growth. Virtual school, discovering new hobbies, gardening, cooking, indoor camping and online learning have been highlights of my quarantine days. These experiences not only kept me busy but also strengthened my relationship with my family and taught me valuable life skills. The pandemic has challenged us all, but it has also shown me that even in the face of adversity, there are opportunities for personal growth and joy.
